Sunderday Sickness...

A little late again this week, but sickness isn’t gonna keep me down, even if I did sleep for 28 out of 36 hours between Saturday night and Monday morning. And so, in honour of my sickness and without further preamble, I give to you the Putrescent Aspis.

Putrescent Aspis
Aura Moderate Conjuration; CL 7th
Slot shield; Price 30,957gp; Weight 10 lb.
DESCRIPTION
Despite its name, this round +2 Putrid Heavy Wooden Shield protects it’s wielder from all manner of contagions.
At will, the holder of a Putrescent Aspis can detect poison in either himself or in anything that is placed in the inner curve of the shield while held by him. Once per day it can also neutralize poison or remove disease in the same manner. It can only do one or the other, either neutralize or remove, per day not both.

Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, detect poison, neutralize poison, remove disease, stinking cloud; Cost 15,478gp 5sp

No, Sunderday hasn't gone away just yet...

I know, I know. That’s two weeks I’ve missed now but I just got overwhelmed with work last week. I worked 3 different jobs and ended up working 13 days straight and an additional 22 hours on my days off on top of my regular 44hr week’s work! So when I came home I was a bit beat and just wanted to sleep. All for a good cause though as I’m visiting the USA in a month’s time (and hoping to catch up with fellow Rambler Paris, unfortunately the only one of my US friends who lives close to where I’m going to be while I’m there) and so that extra pay is going to come in handy for some spending money. Enough with the excuses though, you don’t want to hear that, you want new content!

So this week we’re coming back to the Shield Gems. This little one isn’t amazing, but it can be quite useful in a tight situation and can easily be the difference between winning and losing a fight. Whatever keeps you around longer can always be bad news for your opponent. So I give to you, the Shielder.

Shield Gems
Shield Gems are small jewels that can be attached to a shield by a skilled Armorsmith (DC 15 Craft check). If a check is failed by more than 5 there is a 50% chance the Shield Gem is ruined.
Most appear to be regular gems at first glance, but upon closer inspection, they usually have something that sets them apart (such as a faint glow, sigils etched into their surface, etc).
Some Shield Gems can be activated without attaching them to a shield, and in this case it will be stated in their entry.

Shielder
Aura Faint Abjuration; CL 3rd
Slot –; Price 1,600gp; Weight –
DESCRIPTION
This small hemispherical piece of azurite radiates a magical aura but appears to do nothing. That is until it is attached to a shield. Once they are joined, they become a potent protective combination.
As an immediate action, the bearer of the shield can speak a command world. From the edges of the shield, a shimmering blue band of force springs into existence. This field lasts until the end of the round and grants a +1 deflection bonus to the wielder.
This ability may be used up to three times per day.

Is Sunderday really that transparent?

EDIT: It has been pointed out to me that the spell level for strength of steel was too low given its permanency, and so I have adjusted the level accordingly. This has forced me to re-evaluate the cost of the shield as well.
Sorry guys and I will make sure to (try) and be more diligent in costing in the future.

On time for a change this week (but knowing me as well as I do, I wouldn’t get used to it), I thought I might give the Shield Gems another break and do a (sort of) follow up shield to last week’s Medusa Shield. This one however is a useful tool when fighting a Medusa, or in fact any creature with a gaze attack, and will be a welcome addition to the arsenal of anyone who doesn’t wish to be turned to stone, charmed or any number of other nasty things.

I’ve also included a new spell at the end as well, a little bonus for you all. Stop rubbing off on me Mike!

Crystalline Shield
Aura Moderate Transmutation; CL 13th
Slot shield; Price 54,060gp; Weight 5 lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +1 Crystal Shield is treated in all ways as if it were a Heavy Steel Shield.
The shield is made from a clear, glass-like crystal and can be seen through with some distortion (-5 to perception skill checks based on sight while looking through the shield). When the wielder is looking through the shield however, they can see as if they had Darkvision out to 60’.
The biggest benefit of the shield though, comes when the wielder faces an opponent with a gaze attack. When looking through the shield, they are immune to any gaze attacks directed at them, as the distortion effect caused by the crystal is just enough to dampen the effects of the gaze. The positioning of the shield and the distortion also combine to give a -2 to any attack rolls made while looking through it.
CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, darkvision, strength of steel; Cost 27,030gp

New Spell
Strength of Steel
School Transmutation; Level cleric (artifice) 6, sorcerer/wizard 7
Casting Time 10 minutes
Components V, S, M (a steel ingot)
Range touch
Target one item
Duration permanent
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no
This spell gives any object the strength of steel. If the object is made of multiple materials, such as a wooden shield with leather bindings, it affects the material with the highest percentage of the whole eg. the wood of the aforementioned shield.
The steel ingot is placed on top of the item to be hardened. As the spell is cast, the steel slowly melts into the item until it has been fully absorbed. Once the spell is completed, the object now has Hardness 10 and 30 hit points per inch of thickness. In all other ways there is no change to the object, including weight or material composition.

Sunderday is here once again for your viewing pleasure...

Gah, late again! I’m guessing you guys are starting to see a pattern right...

I thought that rather than do a long run of Shield Gems, like I did with the Shield Walls, I’d break them up and intersperse some actual new shields in amongst them. So this week I’m gonna give you something that I’ve been toying with in my head for months now after I found this awesome picture. I think it’s pretty self explanatory, so I’ll just launch straight into it. Enjoy!

This shield uses the Stone Shield variant that I used for the Shield Wall of the same name (damn those Dwarves, being all pragmatic and naming everything the same). For ease I’ll reprint the stats for it here.
A Stone Shield has all of the same properties as a Tower Shield (except cost), save that it is only the size of a Heavy Steel Shield and therefore cannot be set as cover like a Tower Shield can. Different varieties exist, some using a single piece of stone and others being made from interlocking stone pieces, but all function in the same way. The cost for a Stone Shield is 50gp.

Medusa Shield
Aura Moderate Transmutation; CL 11th
Slot shield; Price 72,766gp; Weight  45 lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +1 Stone Shield is carved to bear the lifelike face of a Medusa on its front, myriad snakes springing forth from its surface as if to strike. When a command is given, the eyes of the Medusa glow a sickly green and the snakes do actually start to writhe. While the snakes are harmless, anyone within 30’ looking at the wielder (GM’s discretion) must save or be affected by a flesh to stone spell. This is treated as a Gaze attack and anyone within 5’ of the wielder is automatically subjected and has a -2 to their save to avoid its effects.
Instead of this blanket use of the shield, the wielder can instead choose to focus its effects upon one target within 100ft. The target does not need to be able to see the shield and because of this they receive a +2 to their save.
The shield can be used up to three times per day in any combination of attacks.

Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, flesh to stone; Cost 36,383gp

Sunderday isn't dead yet!

Hello everyone and welcome back to the long overdue post I promised you. Last weekend just got way too out of hand for me. Game Night, followed by my mother’s Birthday Party, followed by Mother’s Day meant that I was exhausted and just didn’t get my work completed in time for a Sunday entry. I had planned to get it to you a little late, but then to top it off I went and got sick. So anyway, enough with the excuses and on to something nice and new for you to try out.

As I said in my last entry, this item hearkens back to my first serious foray into game design, the 2009 RPG Superstar. I unfortunately didn’t make it to the dizzying height that my fellow blogger Mike did, but it made me realize that maybe (after my first few poorly executed  toe dips) I could actually make something worthwhile after all. In that contest, my entry was something I called the Dazzler. It was a small gem that could be attached to a shield and let you utilize a cantrip at will through your shield. I obviously can’t use that same item here (although I can link to it http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2j21t?Dazzler#1 ) so I thought about what other lower level spells could be used in a similar fashion. Over the next few weeks, instead of giving you a new shield, I’ll instead be giving you some new Shield Gems to enhance your character's existing shields. First up we have a nice passive Shield Gem that I’m sure will be of use to just about everybody who uses a shield. Enjoy!

Mender
Aura Faint Transmutation; CL 3rd
Slot –; Price 3,000gp; Weight –
DESCRIPTION
At first glance this gem appears to be nothing more than a common lump of hematite. Upon handling the gem however, the bearer notices that it is slightly warm to the touch.
Anyone holding a Mender can touch it to an item and use it to cast mending at will. This takes time however and the bearer must hold the Mender against the item to be fixed for 10 minutes for it to work.
When attached to a shield however, this mending process is expedited. The round after the shield it is attached to is damaged, the Mender automatically repairs 1d4 points of damage. It continues to do this every round until either the shield is fully repaired or it gains the broken condition. The round after the shield gains the broken condition, the Mender removes the condition and leaves the shield on half its original hit points. It will then continue to be repaired as normal each round after that.
In order for a Mender to be able to repair a magical shield, the caster level of the person making the Mender must be double that of the effective bonus of the shield to be repaired. The basic Mender can repair both normal and +1 shields. A +2 shield needs a caster level of 4th to work, 6th for +3, 8th for +4, etc, all the way up to 20th level for the ability to repair a +10 shield. Prices for these are as follows: +2 = 4,000gp, +3 = 6,000gp, +4 = 8,000gp, +5 = 10,000gp, +6 = 12,000gp, +7 = 14,000gp, +8 = 16,000gp, +9 = 18,000gp, +10 = 20,000gp.

Final Shield Wall Sunderday!

I can hear a lot of you breathing a sigh of relief that this will be the last week of Shield Walls. Sorry to get your hopes up last week, but I promise this is it (at least until Paizo bring out some new Wall Spells). Next week takes me back to where my RPG design journey began and thankfully gives you all something lower priced that helps make my articles a little more accessible to the common player.

For now, enjoy the last two Shield Walls, one low powered but a very useful utility item and one more high end powerhouse!

Shield Wall
These shields come in many different varieties; two shield walls are described below.
All Walls brought into creation by a Shield Wall can only be formed vertically and cannot be moved or pushed in any way.
To create a Wall, the bearer must place the shield in front of herself at the midpoint of where she wants the Wall to be formed. The Wall then comes into being from a point touching the facing edge of the shield. A Wall always lasts for 1 round per Caster Level and cannot be dismissed early. Each Wall ability can be used three times per day, although any other abilities the Shield may possess are always active. Unless stated in the Description, they require a Standard Action to activate.
A new Wall cannot be brought into existence until any previous Wall has expired.

Campfire Shield
Aura Faint Evocation; CL 5th
Slot shield; Price 15,159gp; Weight 6lb.
DESCRIPTION
This blackened +1/+1 Flaming Light Steel Shield (+1 AC bonus and +1 to hit in melee) is always warm to the touch. As with a normal flaming weapon, it can be commanded to burst into flames on command and when being used to shield bash acts like any other weapon of its ilk.
Once per day however, it can be laid on the ground and commanded to flame. Doing so will activate a campfire shield centered upon it. The shield gives off light and heat equivalent to a small campfire and is still harmful to anyone but the person who activated its ability.
CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, campfire wall; Cost 7,579gp 5sp

Spellbane Shield
Aura Strong Abjuration and Evocation; CL 17th
Slot shield; Price 284,617gp; Weight lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +5 Living Steel Tower Shield is a potent defense for fighters against anyone using magic against them. It can be used to create a wall of suppression as per the spell and can be used to store either one greater dispel magic or two dispel magic spells as if it had a modified spell storing ability. Triggering this ability is the same as a regular spell storing shield, and at the wielder’s discretion, targets whoever hit the wielder with one of the stored spells. Only those two spells can be stored.
It also provides the wielder with Spell Resistance 15.

Super Shield Wall Sunderday!

Greetings everyone and welcome to what I thought would be the final instalment of the Shield Walls segment of Sunderday Shields. But then Mike clued me into two Walls I had neglected and so you’ll get 2 weeks worth of double whammys! Today, I have two for you in a high powered extravaganza (full of rainbows and explosions) and Mike must be rubbing off on me because you even get a bonus new spell as well! These shields are not for the low level character, but I hope that you’ll enjoy them none the less and I’d love to hear any stories of how you used any of my shields for your characters or villains.

So without further ado, I present to you the Rainbow Shield and the Volcano Shield!

Shield Wall
These shields come in many different varieties, two of which are described below.

Rainbow Shield
Aura strong abjuration; CL 15th
Slot shield; Price 197,083gp; Weight  2.5lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +3 Mithral Buckler has a sheen to it that makes it seem as if a rainbow is dancing across its surface. It can create a prismatic wall as per the spell.
Also, once per day the wielder can reach behind the shield and draw forth a shimmering blade of light. This blade takes the form of any one handed bladed weapon that the wielder is proficient with but in all other ways functions as a prismatic weapon.
CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, prismatic wall, prismatic weapon; Cost 98,541gp, 5sp

Volcano Shield
Aura Strong Conjuration; CL 15th
Slot shield; Price 235,748gp; Weight  lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +4/+2 Heavy Fire-Forged Steel Shield is a potent tool for both protection and offence. It has a +4 enhancement bonus to AC, and a +2 enhancement bonus when used to shield bash. As with a normal shield wall, the Volcano Shield can be used up to 3 times per day, but these charges can be used to either create a wall of lava, or to use the eruption ability of the wall of lava spell to fire a stream of lava at an opponent. This stream functions in exactly the same way as if the wielder had commanded the wall to erupt, except that the eruption comes from the shield. When the wall is active however, it cannot be used to erupt; it just forms a wall. Whenever it is used to either create a wall or to erupt, the fire-forged steel acts as if it had been subjected to fire damage and so adds +1d4 fire damage to any shield bash attacks for the next 2 rounds.
It also grants its bearer Fire Resistance 30. The shield must be held for this ability to be active, although being strapped to the bearer’s back does count as being held.
CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, resist energy, wall of lava; Cost 117,874gp

New Spell
Prismatic Weapon
School Evocation; Level magus 6, sorcerer/wizard 7
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range Weapon appears in your empty hand
Target you
Duration see text
Saving Throw see text; Spell Resistance yes
This spell brings into being a shimmering rainbow weapon in your hand. The weapon can take on any shape you wish (although you still need to be proficient with the weapon that you create to avoid attack penalties) and, because the weapon is made of light, it hits as a touch attack. You can hold the weapon without penalty and if it ever leaves your hand it winks out of existence and the spell ends.
The weapon does no damage upon a successful hit; instead the target is affected by one of the weapons colour abilities. Theses abilities are the same abilities as a prismatic spray. The powers go off in order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) and once the weapon has hit seven times (or 1 hour has passed) it disappears.

Happy Chilly Sunderday!

Welcome once more to your short respite from the sanity warping awesome of Mike’s Frightful Menagerie of Beasties!
Of the three Shield Walls I have left to do, I thought about doing one of the big bad boys today, but due to a sudden change of weather here (letting us know that Autumn has well and truly begun) I thought I’d instead give you this one and save the others for a double sized finale next week.

So today I have a simpler Shield Wall for you, and one which most of you probably wouldn’t have even considered as part of the family. While it is still a little expensive, it’s the cheapest of the Shield Walls and so is a bit more accessible to your characters.

Shield Wall
These shields come in many different varieties, one of which is described below.

Storm Shield
Aura Moderate Evocation; CL 5th
Slot shield; Price 32,109gp; Weight 3 lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +1 Light Steel Quickdraw Shield feels much lighter than it should and makes the wielder's arm hairs stand on end, as if charged with static electricity. It can create a wind wall as per the spell.
Once per day it can also be used to remove the deafened condition from the wielder. Finally, it grants its bearer Electricity Resistance 5. The shield must be held for this ability to be active, although being strapped to the bearer’s back does count as being held.
CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, remove blindness/deafness, resist energy, wind wall; Cost 19,054gp, 5sp

La La La... Testing, Testing... Welcome to Sunderday Everyone!

Today’s shield is especially for all you Bard fans out there (c’mon, there’s gotta be at least one of you out there right?). Thankfully it’s a bit cheaper than some of the other shields I’ve had up lately, although it’s still a higher level item. Once I finish up the Shield Walls (another 2 to go after this one) I promise I’ll give you something a little more useful for lower level characters that I think you might like.

Anyway, let’s get today’s entry up so you can all wait in anticipation for Mike’s next monster tomorrow (which will be something close to his heart). :)

Shield Wall
These shields come in many different varieties, one of which is described below.
All Walls brought into creation by a Shield Wall can only be formed vertically and cannot be moved or pushed in any way.
To create a Wall, the bearer must place the shield in front of herself at the midpoint of where she wants the Wall to be formed. Each Wall ability can be used three times per day, although any other abilities the Shield may possess are always active. Unless stated in the Description, they require a Standard Action to activate.
A new Wall cannot be brought into existence until any previous Wall has expired.

Resonance Shield
Aura Moderate Evocation; CL 13th
Slot shield; Price 57,938gp; Weight 2.5 lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +2 Mithral Buckler is made by Bards and has the ability to enhance their musical talents. It can create a wall of sound as per the spell, although unlike most other shield walls this ability can only be used once per day. However it can also be used to cast deafening song bolt once per day as well, in a similar manner to creating the wall (holding the shield out in front of you, pointed towards the targets).
The main reason that the shield is so useful to Bards though is its ability to vibrate and carry on any Bardic Performance that contains only audible components. It can carry on a performance for an additional 4 rounds after the Bard stops and during this time the sonic vibrations emanating from the shield grant an additional +1 shield bonus to AC. This ability is always active and so can be used any number of times per day, as long as the Bard begins a new performance.
CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, Extra Performance, deafening song bolt, wall of sound; Cost 28,969gp

Happy A-Z Interlude Sunderday!

Today I offer a short respite from the frightful horrors of this month's A-Z monster challenge, but rest assured that "Master of the Monstrous" Mike will be back for you tomorrow to continue his foray into eroding your sanity. :)

Continuing on from last week's weighty instalment, today I give you some heavy metal to equip your powerhouse fighter with. This one’s not going to be for everyone I know and its drawback makes it almost unusable by all but the strongest of characters but, as with what Paizo have done (and I really like the way they’ve handled this), I think that sometimes a somewhat sub-optimal choice is a valid one for making a flavourful character.

So without further ado, I give to you the Iron Shield!

Iron Shield
Aura Moderate Conjuration; CL 14th
Slot shield; Price 110,490gp; Weight 75 lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +1 Tower Shield is made from thick iron, not wood or steel, and weighs so much that only someone with Strength of 16 or more can wield it without taking a further -2 penalty to their melee attacks (-4 total). It can create a wall of iron as per the spell.
In addition it also has the moderate fortification special ability and provides DR 5/bludgeoning.

Happy Easter Sunderday!

I hope everyone is having a relaxing Easter Sunderday so far. I know I’m exhausted from chasing around chocolate enhanced children all day. But being the glutton for punishment that I am (and notorious low sleep getter that I am), I’m backing up to do an all night Movie Marathon (Hansel + Gretel, GI JOE Retaliation and Jack Reacher), then going straight to 8 hrs of work! I am going to be one tired boy come Monday night...

So today, I’m going to give you something from a race I consider quintessential shield users, the Dwarves. Their work with alchemically treated stone to create armor has been successful, but being the pragmatic people they are, they also wanted more protection to go with it. Enter the Stone Shield.

Dwarven Mastersmiths have also perfected a Shield Wall variant for use by their greatest heroes using a Stone Shield as its base. Not surprisingly, this shield also bears the name Stone Shield and so it can sometimes be confusing to non-Dwarves as to whether or not a particular shield is magical or not.

Shield Wall
These shields come in many different varieties, the Stone Shield is described below.
All Walls brought into creation by a Shield Wall can only be formed vertically and cannot be moved or pushed in any way.
To create a Wall, the bearer must place the shield in front of herself at the midpoint of where she wants the Wall to be formed. A new Wall cannot be brought into existence until any previous Wall has expired.

Stone Shield
Aura Moderate Conjuration; CL 14th
Slot shield; Price 93,720gp; Weight 45 lb.
DESCRIPTION
This shield is favored by Dwarven heroes and is made from a single piece of stone. It has the properties of a +2 Stone Shield (see above) and can be used to create a wall of stone as per the spell.
It also has the Bashing and Light Fortification special abilities.

It's Sunderday once again!

They just roll around so quickly!

This week I'm gonna give you a bit of Druid love. No... wait, don't have me hauled away by animal services, not that kind of Druid love! Before Ultimate Equipment, Druids suffered a bit in the armor department but now they have a few more choices available to them they're not as restricted (well except by the exorbitant cost of the Wild special ability!).
I know the Shield Walls are a bit on the simple side and spell-in-a-can-ish but I think they make for an interesting spin on the use of shields and can make a melee character much more versatile.
So without further ado, I give you the Thorn Shield!

This +1 Light Spiked Greenwood Shield is primarily made and used by Druids. It has long thorny protrusions covering it and can create a wall of thorns as per the spell.
It also confers the Wild special ability.

Happy um... Monderday?

Greeting once again fellow shield lovers and welcome to this week’s Sunderday installment. I’m a lot late this week because I um... actually forgot all about it! I was so tired that I went to bed early on Sunday night and it completely slipped my mind.  Whoops!

Continuing on from last week's double feature, this week I’m giving you another Shield Wall, but since this one is a swift shield I’m going to make this post nice and quick like my namesake. So without further adieu I give to you the Force Shield!

Shield Wall
These shields come in many different varieties.
A new Wall cannot be brought into existence until any previous Wall has expired.

Force Shield
Aura Moderate; CL 12th
Slot shield; Price 66,990gp; Weight 10lb.
DESCRIPTION
Despite its thin, fragile appearance, this +3 Heavy Mithral Shield is actually quite sturdy and can be used to create a wall of force as a free action.

Merry Sunderday to All and to All an on time morning!

Today I’m going to introduce you to a new sub-group of magical shields I developed, the Shield Walls. Each one can be used to create a certain type of Wall spell and most have other abilities that thematically link into the type of Wall they create.
Over the next few weeks I’ll give you a new Shield Wall, but for this post I’m going to let you have two, since it’s hard to separate these two from their thematically linked elements.

Enjoy and as always I hope you get as much enjoyment from using them as I did creating them.

Shield Wall
These shields come in many different varieties, two of which are described below.
All Walls use their Caster Level to determine their dimensions and other properties (such as damage). Each Wall ability can be used three times per day, although any other abilities the Shield may possess are always active.
Unless stated in the Description, they require a Standard Action to activate and a new Wall cannot be brought into existence until the previous Wall has expired.
