Zombie, Wood (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

With this entry, Frightful Fridays! A-Z! comes to a close, and what better way than an apocalyptic creature like the zombie. This is no ordinary zombie, though, since it spawns from trees and other (formerly) living plants. Today's extra is a reaction to this zombie's appearance.

I hope you enjoyed all the monsters from this month, and I certainly hope a couple make it into your games. If you do introduce any, let me know in the comments for the monster, or send me an email (I think it's listed in my profile). Thanks for reading and I'll see you again on Friday!

What at first looks like some strange humanoid covered in bits of wood reveals itself to be completely composed of rotting wood rounded out with animal parts; its eyes glow malevolently.

Yggdrasillian (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Welcome back  for the next-to-last monster of Frightful Fridays! A-Z! Today's monster marks the 50th I've done for this feature (the 51st overall monster thanks to Paris's contribution), and I'm celebrating this milestone with a new plant. I wanted to explore the idea of an ostensibly good-aligned creature that sees itself as a protector of the multiverse's forests, including the not so nice ones. This creature doesn't object to those who keep an evil forest in check, and it will even aid those trapped within such a forest, but it intervenes when paladins start hacking away at living trees, even if those trees are evil.

Today's extra touches on the yggdrasillian's multiplanar exposure, which grants a range of powers to weapons crafted from wood gifted by the creature (or harvested its corpse).

I'll be back tomorrow with the last monster of the month, and then I'll be back to my regular Friday schedule starting this Friday. Thanks for reading!

Super Shield Wall Sunderday!

Greetings everyone and welcome to what I thought would be the final instalment of the Shield Walls segment of Sunderday Shields. But then Mike clued me into two Walls I had neglected and so you’ll get 2 weeks worth of double whammys! Today, I have two for you in a high powered extravaganza (full of rainbows and explosions) and Mike must be rubbing off on me because you even get a bonus new spell as well! These shields are not for the low level character, but I hope that you’ll enjoy them none the less and I’d love to hear any stories of how you used any of my shields for your characters or villains.

So without further ado, I present to you the Rainbow Shield and the Volcano Shield!

Shield Wall
These shields come in many different varieties, two of which are described below.
All Walls brought into creation by a Shield Wall can only be formed vertically and cannot be moved or pushed in any way.
To create a Wall, the bearer must place the shield in front of herself at the midpoint of where she wants the Wall to be formed. The Wall then comes into being from a point touching the facing edge of the shield. A Wall always lasts for 1 round per Caster Level and cannot be dismissed early. Each Wall ability can be used three times per day, although any other abilities the Shield may possess are always active. Unless stated in the Description, they require a Standard Action to activate.
A new Wall cannot be brought into existence until any previous Wall has expired.

Rainbow Shield
Aura strong abjuration; CL 15th
Slot shield; Price 197,083gp; Weight  2.5lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +3 Mithral Buckler has a sheen to it that makes it seem as if a rainbow is dancing across its surface. It can create a prismatic wall as per the spell.
Also, once per day the wielder can reach behind the shield and draw forth a shimmering blade of light. This blade takes the form of any one handed bladed weapon that the wielder is proficient with but in all other ways functions as a prismatic weapon.
CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, prismatic wall, prismatic weapon; Cost 98,541gp, 5sp

Volcano Shield
Aura Strong Conjuration; CL 15th
Slot shield; Price 235,748gp; Weight  lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +4/+2 Heavy Fire-Forged Steel Shield is a potent tool for both protection and offence. It has a +4 enhancement bonus to AC, and a +2 enhancement bonus when used to shield bash. As with a normal shield wall, the Volcano Shield can be used up to 3 times per day, but these charges can be used to either create a wall of lava, or to use the eruption ability of the wall of lava spell to fire a stream of lava at an opponent. This stream functions in exactly the same way as if the wielder had commanded the wall to erupt, except that the eruption comes from the shield. When the wall is active however, it cannot be used to erupt; it just forms a wall. Whenever it is used to either create a wall or to erupt, the fire-forged steel acts as if it had been subjected to fire damage and so adds +1d4 fire damage to any shield bash attacks for the next 2 rounds.
It also grants its bearer Fire Resistance 30. The shield must be held for this ability to be active, although being strapped to the bearer’s back does count as being held.
CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, resist energy, wall of lava; Cost 117,874gp

New Spell
Prismatic Weapon
School Evocation; Level magus 6, sorcerer/wizard 7
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range Weapon appears in your empty hand
Target you
Duration see text
Saving Throw see text; Spell Resistance yes
This spell brings into being a shimmering rainbow weapon in your hand. The weapon can take on any shape you wish (although you still need to be proficient with the weapon that you create to avoid attack penalties) and, because the weapon is made of light, it hits as a touch attack. You can hold the weapon without penalty and if it ever leaves your hand it winks out of existence and the spell ends.
The weapon does no damage upon a successful hit; instead the target is affected by one of the weapons colour abilities. Theses abilities are the same abilities as a prismatic spray. The powers go off in order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) and once the weapon has hit seven times (or 1 hour has passed) it disappears.

Xenomorphic Infiltrator (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Happy Saturday to you, and welcome back to Frightful Fridays! A-Z! Theodric found this monster, and posed the question of whether this was a monster or some sort of armor. That spurred some thought, and I decided that perhaps the elf wasn't actually wearing the xenomorphs, but was instead a single metamorphic xenomorph impersonating the elf. The illustration depicts what the poor victim sees before the creature kills him.

The extra comes from a weapon that the xenomorphic infiltrators' accidental creators, the yih (from the soon-to-be-released Sailing the Starlit Sea), developed to defeat the creatures, but a GM should be able to introduce it to a campaign with a different origin.

Have a great weekend, but be sure to come back tomorrow for Flash's new shields. He's wrapping up his shield wall series with a massive finale. I'll be back on Monday for the penultimate monster in the series. Thanks for reading!

The elf’s body seemingly dissolves into an inky mass from which three fanged, acid-dripping maws emerge.

Worm, Leviathan (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Welcome to Frightful Fridays! A-Z! temporarily in its correct day slot. Sadly, this is the last Friday of April, and I only have 3 monsters left to go for the month. Today's entry calls back to the dark tendril I posted a few months back with an even more terrifying emissary of the mysterious entity that brings forth these creatures. The leviathan worm can call forth a more powerful version of the black tentacles spell, which comprises half today's extra feature (the other half is an even more potent version of the spell).

That's all for today, but I'll be back tomorrow with monster "X". As always, thank you for reading!

This great, gray worm stands taller than most structures and waves numerous tentacles about; the stench coming off the creature is overwhelming.

Venomous Clockwork (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

With five monsters left in April, this feature finally includes a new spider-related monster. Rather than a mashup with another monster, though, this one stands alone as a construct. Its modus operandi matches that of real-world spiders: wait for its unsuspecting victim to stumble upon it and poison it. This is great for the character ultimately responsible for the poisoning, but, of course, not for the poisonee. The extra for this monster allows a GM to craft slightly different versions of a venomous clockwork depending on the GM's desires.

I hope you like the venomous clockwork, and I'll be back tomorrow for Frightful Fridays! normal slot. Thanks for reading!

Unictopus (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Frightful Fridays! A-Z! is heading into the home stretch, and today's "U" monster appropriately lands underwater. The unictopus is another mashup that Patrick discovered, and I liked that I could finally put a unconditionally helpful creature in the underwater lineup. Sure, it might look scary to characters who encounter it for the first time; hopefully, they'll stick around long enough to find out that this creature has their interests at heart. The extra feature is more of a living relic than a magic item--the unictopus sheds its horn to make way for a new growth, but that old horn is still quite useful, and the creature gives it to a Good character to help in its fight against aquatic evil-doers.

Only five more monsters to go before the A-Z challenge concludes. I'll see you tomorrow for monster "V". Thanks for reading!

This impossible creature features the head and main body belonging to a unicorn, but its legs transition into octopus tentacles, with another set of octopus tentacles added for good measure.

Treevenant (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Frightful Fridays! A-Z! reaches the letter "T" today and features its first plant creature. Patrick found this illustration, and I picked up on the seeming anger of this tree amid some unknown devastation. This surviving tree holds the spirits of the inhabitants of its destroyed home, and those spirits drive the treevenant to inflict punishment on those responsible. I originally had this monster's alignment set to Chaotic Evil, but I decided to keep one Neutral component to keep it somewhat connected to its natural origins. Today's extra derives directly from the treevenant's most impressive attack.

I hope you enjoy this first (but certainly not last) plant monster for Frightful Fridays! and I'll be back for Wednesday's "U" monster. Thanks for reading!

This tree stands alone in a clearing; it rustles with apparently razor-sharp leaves not in accordance with the wind.

Street Kaida (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

It's a brand new week of monsters for Frightful Fridays! A-Z! starting with the street kaida, which makes a great complement to a spellcasting rogue. Like its larger kin, it covets wealth of all kinds, but it can only transport a gem or a couple of coins that it lifts from unsuspecting (or slow) marks. Today's extra provides a little help for this Tiny monster's ability to execute a sneak attack by allowing it to establish a flank in spite of its short reach.

Thanks once again for reading, and I'll see you tomorrow!

This small dragon flies down the alley, only slightly burdened by the gem it grasps in its claws; the creature has a tiny dagger tied to its back.

Happy Chilly Sunderday!

Welcome once more to your short respite from the sanity warping awesome of Mike’s Frightful Menagerie of Beasties!
Of the three Shield Walls I have left to do, I thought about doing one of the big bad boys today, but due to a sudden change of weather here (letting us know that Autumn has well and truly begun) I thought I’d instead give you this one and save the others for a double sized finale next week.

So today I have a simpler Shield Wall for you, and one which most of you probably wouldn’t have even considered as part of the family. While it is still a little expensive, it’s the cheapest of the Shield Walls and so is a bit more accessible to your characters.

Shield Wall
These shields come in many different varieties, one of which is described below.

Storm Shield
Aura Moderate Evocation; CL 5th
Slot shield; Price 32,109gp; Weight 3 lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +1 Light Steel Quickdraw Shield feels much lighter than it should and makes the wielder's arm hairs stand on end, as if charged with static electricity. It can create a wind wall as per the spell.
Once per day it can also be used to remove the deafened condition from the wielder. Finally, it grants its bearer Electricity Resistance 5. The shield must be held for this ability to be active, although being strapped to the bearer’s back does count as being held.

Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, remove blindness/deafness, resist energy, wind wall; Cost 19,054gp, 5sp

Relativity Salmon (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

The relativity salmon closes out the third week of Frightful Fridays! A-Z! Theodric passed this image on to me with the subtle challenge of designing a creature that differed from the goliath etherfish. I hope I managed to succeed at the challenge with the salmon, which is not quite as aggressive as its Ethereal cousin and more widely traveled. As an extra feature, the druid spell summon relativity salmon allows a druid to gain access to planar travel, but it requires a little finesse with the summoned creature.

I'll be back on Monday for the start of the final full week of the A-Z challenge with "S." In the meantime, Flash will have a new shield for you tomorrow!

A large speckled fish appears out of thin air, and it swims through the air as if it were water; a large sphere of extraplanar material surrounds the creature.

Queemp (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

As Frightful Fridays! A-Z! settles into its normal Friday slot, I've got a cute monster for you that has an unusual attack method. Anyone who has seen these frogs that smash into each other as a means of hunting knows that I like throwing out something goofy like this every now and again. Hopefully, its goofiness won't make it any less terrifying when it drops from a tree branch, blows up in size, and then crushes characters unfortunate enough to be underneath it.

Today's extra takes the notion of the queemp opening a portal to another plane for its expansion and applies it to a bag a character can use to draw in elemental material that he can then fire at his opponents.

Have a great Friday, and I'll see you tomorrow for the "R" entry. Thanks for reading!

This pink octopus is no larger than a full-grown cat; it sits on a high limb and cries plaintively.

Pyranhaconda (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Frightful Fridays! A-Z! is nearing the end of its third week in the A-Z challenge, and today's monster resulted from some off-the-wall conversation among friends. Patrick turned up this mock SyFy monster and Paris posited the idea of making it fire-based and coined the name "pyranhaconda." This may have been the monster that convinced me to do the A-Z challenge--since I had something for "P" surely I could come up with the other 25. Then Patrick came up with the first monster in the series, the aerolion, so I was set.

I mentioned earlier that I didn't want to add a monster that would dilute the main feature monster, but the idea of salamander pyranhaconda wranglers got stuck in my head. So today's extra features a fully-statted salamander ranger with the special ability to take one of these fiery snake creatures as a companion.

I'll be back tomorrow for my normal slot here on Mythopoeic Rambling with monster "Q." See you then!

This unwholesome combination of constrictor snake and piranha radiates heat and flicks a fiery tongue between wicked teeth.

Obscurite (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Welcome back to Frightful Fridays! A-Z! Today's monster was sent to me by Patrick and is the first fey creature for this feature. Admittedly, the obscurite comes very close to being an undead creature and shares a few abilities with undead. I liked the idea of leaving it as a fey creature, since it seemed uniquely suited to fey. Today's extra, the crystallized memory wondrous item, ties fairly directly to the obscurite, and can be used as a MacGuffin for characters who might not be able to easily handle an obscurite.

I hope you enjoy the obscurite and I'll see you here again for tomorrow's monster!

Nautilophalange (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Today's Frightful Fridays! A-Z! entry goes back to the sea. Unlike the other aquatic creatures presented here, this one might actually be helpful. It still won't have the characters' best interests at heart, though, and will use them as a means to an end--hopefully one the characters want to achieve as well. The extra feature derives from the nautilophalange's bane ability and is a spell that a character in the business of dispatching enemy creatures can use to get some additional assistance.

I'll see you again for tomorrow's "O" monster. Thanks for reading!

This large lobster has eyes that are decidedly unlobsterlike and, more unusually, a hand in place of its claws and antennae.

Melesmaniac (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

It's the start of a new week of Frightful Fridays! A-Z! and the halfway point too. Today's monster features a version of the badger, an animal that I have been associated with for 5 years now. I happen to like the association, and I have tried to place a badger or two in projects I've worked on, when it makes sense. This venture is no different, and this illustration uncovered by Theodric was perfect for today's entry.

Today's extra feature was a bit of a surprise to me. At first, I thought I would just highlight other [insert name here]maniacs, but I wanted to concentrate on this particular one (if you made a decent Perception roll, you will have picked up on the fact that I will have another maniac monster in a future Frightful Fridays!). The village of afflicted and formerly afflicted melesmaniacs ended up striking me out of the blue, and I grew to like the idea of an entire place populated by people who won't interact with characters out of fear of misunderstandings literally escalating beyond control.

The halfway point has put me in a bit of a reflective mood, and it is here I would like to thank Theodric for hosting this feature and getting me started with a number of illustrations. I'd also like to thank everyone who has pointed out illustrations during this feature's run (Craig, Patrick, Paris, Kirk, Rob--hopefully I'm not forgetting anyone). Finally, I wish to express my appreciation to all of you who have been reading and commenting.

See you tomorrow!

This badger is larger than average and has a murderous gleam in its eyes.

La La La... Testing, Testing... Welcome to Sunderday Everyone!

Today’s shield is especially for all you Bard fans out there (c’mon, there’s gotta be at least one of you out there right?). Thankfully it’s a bit cheaper than some of the other shields I’ve had up lately, although it’s still a higher level item. Once I finish up the Shield Walls (another 2 to go after this one) I promise I’ll give you something a little more useful for lower level characters that I think you might like.

Anyway, let’s get today’s entry up so you can all wait in anticipation for Mike’s next monster tomorrow (which will be something close to his heart). :)

Shield Wall
These shields come in many different varieties, one of which is described below.

Resonance Shield
Aura Moderate Evocation; CL 13th
Slot shield; Price 57,938gp; Weight 2.5 lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +2 Mithral Buckler is made by Bards and has the ability to enhance their musical talents. It can create a wall of sound as per the spell, although unlike most other shield walls this ability can only be used once per day. However it can also be used to cast deafening song bolt once per day as well, in a similar manner to creating the wall (holding the shield out in front of you, pointed towards the targets).
The main reason that the shield is so useful to Bards though is its ability to vibrate and carry on any Bardic Performance that contains only audible components. It can carry on a performance for an additional 4 rounds after the Bard stops and during this time the sonic vibrations emanating from the shield grant an additional +1 shield bonus to AC. This ability is always active and so can be used any number of times per day, as long as the Bard begins a new performance.

Lead Kaida (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Happy Saturday to you Frightful Fridays! readers out there. Today marks the return of one of my indulgences, the kaida. Continuing on with the theme of class-synergistic kaida, the lead version is a great match for martial characters given its natural ability to improve weapons and armor. Hopefully, there's a multiclassing spellcaster who would like to have one of these dragons as his or her familiar.

The extras for today's monster apply directly to the monster. The two new feats are only available to lead kaidas, but they should give GMs some flexibility in designing the creatures. Additionally, paranoid PCs might benefit from the kaida's new-found ability to thwart divination and eventually wreak havoc on nearby spellcasters.

Flash will be here tomorrow with a new shield, and I'll be back on Monday with the halfway-point monster for the A-Z challenge. Have a great weekend!

This small blue-grey dragon alights with a thud, its weight obviously belying its size. It radiates heat that is not harmful, but it is also not pleasant.

Krakenwight (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Frightful Fridays! A-Z! lands temporarily on its normal day for today's krakenwight. Another in a decent set of aquatic creatures, this one helps to "flesh out" the dread kraken's overall place as self-styled ruler below the waves. It's much more of a manageable challenge for characters, though.

Today's extra feature is something that probably won't see use by player characters (except for evil campaigns, or the occasional character who chooses to channel negative energy), but sometimes monsters like to have toys for themselves. I hope it provides a not-so-nice surprise to characters facing off against undead creatures.

I'll be back tomorrow for the final Frightful Fridays! post of this week. See you then.

This human-sized octopus has a maw filled with rotting teeth and eight sickly looking tentacles.

Jelly, Reanimator (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Today's Frightful Fridays! A-Z! monster has the dubious distinction of being the first ooze for this feature. This is a great illustration that I've had in my "to do" folder for a while, since I wanted to design something to do it justice. Hopefully, I succeeded.

The extra feature is another alchemical creation from the monster's corpse, and this one is quite the double-edged sword. You can use a paste created from the corpse to revive a character, but the raised character has a hard time limit, and anyone using the paste courts the danger of bringing the reanimator jelly back to life.

I have further plans for this monster, which I will get to after the completion of the A-Z challenge. Speaking of which, check back tomorrow for the "K" monster. Thanks for reading!

This skeletal creature drips a sticky, green substance; upon closer inspection, the green substance completely engulfs the skeleton.

Incirrinitaur (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Welcome to the 9th entry in this month's Frightful Fridays! A-Z! feature. Something I noticed fairly quickly when I was deciding on images to choose from for this month is that my friends find a lot of aquatic monsters. This adds a little bit to the challenge of creating monsters since I have more of an affinity for terrestrial-based creatures. Still, the incirrinitaur was a fun monster to work on, and I ended up borrowing a bit from the instant fortress for the crystal sphere, an incirrinitaur's home away from home.

Thanks for checking this monster out, and I'll be back for tomorrow's "J" monster...this time with a more straightforward name I hope.

Heterochthonmouse (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Today's Frightful Fridays! A-Z! offering is a Lovecraftian horror writ small. I was taken by the alien mouse that Patrick pointed out, and I wanted to include it in the A-Z challenge, but "A" was already taken by the aerolion. A quick visit to the thesaurus later, and I learned a new word (heterochthonous), one which I could twist to my own ends. Hopefully, this doesn't seem too tortured a way to get an "H" entry.

The extra offering assumes that a character figures out that the dead creature can be carried and that the character would actually want to carry around this weird corpse.

I hope you enjoy the heterochthonmouse, and I will be back tomorrow, probably with another tentacled monster. Thanks for reading!

At first glance this appears to be an extraordinarily large mouse, but it reveals its utterly unnatural features: seven black eyes and three tentacles that dominate its face.

Giant Chalcid Wasp (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Starting off week 2 of Frightful Fridays! A-Z! is the giant chalcid wasp, a find I owe to Flash. Flying, stinging insects rank third after clowns and spiders in my least-favorite-things list, so a giant-sized, evil version of this parasitic wasp seems like a great monster. In addition, this re-envisioned wasp has multiple stingers that it can shoot at characters or leave embedded in a victim, depending on how cranky the wasp feels. The stingers can bypass 10 points of hardness, so no hiding behind doors from this thing either.

I hope you'll be back for tomorrow's "H" monster. Thanks for reading!

A loud droning sound precedes the appearance of this improbably large wasp with an enormous stinger that drips with venom.

Happy A-Z Interlude Sunderday!

Today I offer a short respite from the frightful horrors of this month's A-Z monster challenge, but rest assured that "Master of the Monstrous" Mike will be back for you tomorrow to continue his foray into eroding your sanity. :)

Continuing on from last week's weighty instalment, today I give you some heavy metal to equip your powerhouse fighter with. This one’s not going to be for everyone I know and its drawback makes it almost unusable by all but the strongest of characters but, as with what Paizo have done (and I really like the way they’ve handled this), I think that sometimes a somewhat sub-optimal choice is a valid one for making a flavourful character.

So without further ado, I give to you the Iron Shield!

Shield Wall
These shields come in many different varieties, one of which is described below.

Iron Shield
Aura Moderate Conjuration; CL 14th
Slot shield; Price 110,490gp; Weight 75 lb.
DESCRIPTION
This +1 Tower Shield is made from thick iron, not wood or steel, and weighs so much that only someone with Strength of 16 or more can wield it without taking a further -2 penalty to their melee attacks (-4 total). It can create a wall of iron as per the spell.
In addition it also has the moderate fortification special ability and provides DR 5/bludgeoning.

Field Phantasm (Frightful Fridays! A-Z!)

Today's "F" entry for Frightful Fridays! comes courtesy of Patrick. I fancied the idea of a neutral, incorporeal outsider that uses its powers on behalf of its deity to protect threatened animals or take revenge on those who commit wholesale slaughter of animals. Along with this, I've added a spell that druids and rangers can use to emulate a cleric's planar ally spell and call one of these creatures.

That's it for this week. I'll be back on Monday with the letter "G". In the meantime, Flash will have a new shield, so you should enjoy uninterrupted coverage throughout the month. As always, thanks for reading!
